UNDERGRADUATE WORK

During my time as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I looked for as many opportunities as I could to learn more about publishing and try my hand at graphic design. I was a member of the Wisconsin Union Directorate Publications Committee and held various roles within the committee and worked on two different journal publications. For my reporting and strategic communication degree, I learned about magazine publication and how to organize an advertising campaign. In many of my journalism classes, we also learned about web design and social media to help prepare us to be independent and versatile reporters in an internet-driven industry.

CURB MAGAZINE

Curb Magazine is published every year by selected journalism students at UW-Madison. Each class chooses the type of magazine and publishes the entire thing under the guidance of a professor. The only requirement is that it has to be about Wisconsin.

In 2011 I was part of the Curb team as a production associate. As part of the design team, we researched similarly styled magazines, selected the fonts and color scheme, and then laid out the pages and created ads.

ILLUMINATION: THE UNDERGRADUATE JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES

In 2011, I was the layout editor for the spring issue of Illumination: The Undergraduate Journal of Humanities. I had previously been involved in other areas of the submission review process, but was thrilled to be in charge of the layout. I helped select the team of designers and together we perused past issues and other literary journals to decide on a style. I created the master file and templates for everyone to follow, assigned page spreads, checked the publication for design quality, put together the files for printing, and then helped review the final proofs.

ADROIT MARKETING

In addition to our individual campaigns, the designers from each team worked together to put together a press kit for a mock press release that was presented to a class of reporting students. With input from other designers, I put together the master file of the press kit and handled printing out copies for the reporters at the press release.

For a marketing class, we were divided into teams and had to work together to create a marketing account that was in charge of building an advertising campaign for a specific model of car. As a team, we researched the product and data on people likely to buy the vehicle. Then we developed a tagline for our campaign and had to compile our findings in a campaign manual. As a co-designer, I helped put together the manual and created half of the advertisement mockups, which included potential billboard signs and online and print ads.
